Surviving the Shadows tells the stories of everyday Americans who have found themselves battling the journey through
Post-traumatic stress. Bob Delaney tells the stories in an intimate and very personal point of view. His treatment with Dr. Guy DaSilva is presented in layman’s terms. PTSD is not something to be embarrassed about and hidden, but rather a real condition that needs specific treatment and requires a tricky pathway for recovery — peer-to-peer conversations are critical components to a successful readjustment.”

Testimony from Bob Delaney, NBA Referee
From the book Covert, My Years Infiltating the Mob (pages 226-227).
“In the summer of 2007, I gained new insights about the physical effects undercover work had had on me. The fact was, I’d been
feeling a little more rund-down than usual, which I had attributed, in part, to the demands of another long NBA season and the many other projects that occupy my life. I was hitting the gym hard, but not making the gains I wanted. I had heard about the DaSilva Institute and the work Dr. Guy DaSilva has been doing in pathology, internal medicine, hematology, and anti-aging medicine, which is really preventative medicine. I wanted his opinion.
Dr. DaSilva knows about my NBA career, but had no idea about my past life undercover. He got right to work, taking more blood samples than I’d given in my entire life-about thirty vials-to do a thorough lab investigation. He measures biochemical parameters in the body and then comes up with a diagnosis, rather than eliciting information from the patient on the front end. It’s an objective way of identifying a problem.
During my follow-up appointment, I was amazed as Dr. DaSilva started accurately describing things about me before we’d even finished our conversation. What really sparked his interest was that two hormones produced in the adenal gland-part of the stress-hormone category-were abnormally low. At first he thought the labs had made a mistake. A person of my age, in their mid-fifties, with a stressful job, should have a high level of those hormones. But what I had was adrenal burnout, adrenal fatigue-having depleted hormones that are supposed to be on the rise as you get older. And then he asked me point-bland: ‘Have you been through a prolonged, traumatic experience of some kind in your life?’
I was stunned. There was actually a long-termed physiological impact of the Post-Traumatic Stress disorder. I had lived through so much stress that hormones governing the basic human fight-or-flight instinct were barely functioning-making me less effective at handling stress than I once had been. Some of the symptoms of that condition may include lack of sleep and pre-diabetic blood-sugar issues, both of which I had. Listening to Dr. DaSilva gave me a sense of relief-big time. Dr. DaSilva explained that my strong willpower had been sustaining me, but that he had a medical remedy. Soon afterward, I started on a regimen restoring my hormonal levels to normal. I now have new information to share with undercover agents who have gone through the stresses of living a double life, immersed in danger.” “Thank you for all your support- and making me feel much better!”
