The Imperative Yet Under-appreciated Lymphatic System
We’re excited to see the lymphatic system finally getting some overdue appreciation in culture but do you really understand what it does? Some of our patients are likely sick of us hounding them about the importance of detoxification and drainage but we’re so passionate about this because we believe our willingness to dedicate energy to these functions may provide the missing piece for so many on their journeys to optimal health.
The lymphatic system is a major player in the immune and circulatory systems. Each day about 30 liters of fluid pass from the blood capillaries to the interstitial space (which is the space or environment where the cells reside). About 90% of this fluid re-enters the blood vessels but the remaining 10% (approximately 3 liters) enters the lymphatic vessels in the form of lymph. Lymph is a clear watery liquid that contains lipids (fats), proteins, enzymes, urea, minerals, hormones, dissolved gases, white blood cells, toxins, bacteria, pathogens, and cellular debris. We like to think about the lymph system as the garbage truck carrying waste from the body so when it is effectively supported and working properly, it’s easy to see how the body can be overwhelmed with toxins creating an environment inviting for opportunistic infections and disease. Just imagine your home if your garbage truck driver went on strike!
Common symptoms of impaired lymph flow include swelling/fluid retention, fatigue, bloating, pain/stiffness, headaches, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, skin changes, food sensitivities, shortness of breath, and frequent or chronic infections.
If you suffer any of these challenges, there are many modalities to support your lymphatic system and promote drainage and detoxification. These include regular and effective exercise, using a rebounder (trampoline), dry brushing, and lymph massage. Supporting your lymphatics promotes energy, weight loss, healing and restoration of tissue, improved absorption and utilization of nutrients, healthy aging, and more. In addition to the above-mentioned strategies, we are now offering a powerful tool in our office to help you reach your goals faster.
