Chelation therapy, a long-time mainstream treatment for drawing lead and other heavy metal poisons out of the body, is often misunderstood in its effectiveness to address, identify, and treat other ailments.
What is Chelation Therapy?
The term “chelation” is a derivative of the Greek “chele,” meaning “claw.” The chemicals that are injected during chelation act as a claw or magnet to pull the poisons from the fatty organs such as the brain and bone marrow where they are stored and accumulate in the body indefinitely. The poison is then reconfigured as water-soluble, allowing it to be excreted through the kidneys and lymph nodes as urine, saliva, and perspiration.
A heavy metal has a density at least five times that of water and cannot be metabolized by the body, therefore it accumulates. Heavy metal toxicity can cause our mental functions, energy, nervous system, kidneys, lungs and other organs to decline.

Lead poisoning per se is not as prevalent as it once was, due to federal regulations and import restrictions, but other heavy-metal toxins such as iron, mercury, excess calcium, cadmium, and zinc are still prevalent in our environment. We find these in food, even organic; in our tap water, even if filtered; and in the air we breathe. Factories continue to dump waste, poisoning our oceans, rivers and groundwater. If nothing else, chelation is a way to rule out heavy-metal poisoning as the culprit in disease.
How Does Chelation Therapy Work?
The most common type of chelator, a powerful antioxidant called Calcium-EDTA (calcium ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid), is administered intravenously. When EDTA enters the bloodstream it binds to the metal atoms and flushes them out with the urine.
EDTA treatment lasts about two hours, with the patient relaxing in a recliner while the chemical is administered slowly through an IV. We include a hearty dose of vitamins and minerals with the treatment, creating a calming “cocktail” effect.
During the past 50 years, over a million patients have undergone chelation therapy for a wide range of circulatory problems. Chelation has given heart-disease patients an alternative to invasive heart surgery and has enabled patients with intermittent claudication to increase their walking distance. It has been used to alleviate angina, to reduce high blood pressure, and to spare diabetic patients from limb amputation.
The procedure has proven to be extremely safe. Of over 500,000 patients nationwide treated with chelation therapy using the protocol established by the American College for the Advancement of Medicine (ACAM), not a single fatality has occurred. Compare this to coronary artery bypass surgery, which has a fatality rate of 4 percent.
The Benefits of Chelation
Some conditions that benefit from chelation include cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetic complications, heavy metal toxicity, hypertension, intermittent claudication, memory disorders, peripheral neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease and slow-healing wounds.
Chelation therapy has also been promoted as an alternative treatment for many unrelated conditions, such as gangrene from diabetes, thyroid disorders, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, psoriasis, diabetes, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease. It’s also helpful in the improvement of memory, sight, hearing, and smell.
With the recent focus on increased autism in children, researchers are looking at a connection between vaccines that might carry heavy metals and impairment of brain and socialization functions. There is also an indication that pregnant women may be passing toxic chemicals from their body to their unborn children.
I would like to see more emphasis placed on preconception medicine. The Environmental Working Group of the FDA found 200 chemicals in the umbilical cord blood that feeds the developing baby in the womb. Other evidence of prenatal toxicity includes a lack of development in deciduous (baby) teeth, causing damage to the permanent teeth as they develop and grow.
Additionally, it’s highly likely that the immune system is hit hard by toxins, causing the white blood cells in bone marrow to languish in their role of preventing and attacking infectious diseases.
I recommend chelation as a “provocative test,” when nothing seems to work to correct a medical problem that’s left unsolved by other specialists in many fields. This therapy is effective. A review of 40 published and 30 unpublished studies involving over 25,000 patients who underwent EDTA chelation demonstrated that 87 percent of them benefited from this therapy.
